English Football's Season Opened in Wales Yesterday. Wembley Was Hosting a Concert.
The Football Association owns the stadium. It did not own August 16.
Yesterday afternoon Arsenal met Manchester City in the Community Shield, the one-off match between the league champion and the FA Cup winner, played the weekend before the league itself begins. It took place in Cardiff, at the Principality Stadium, home of Welsh rugby and about two hours west of London by road. The last time English football's curtain-raiser went outside England was 2006.
Wembley was not dark. The Weeknd was there — August 14, 15, 16, 18 and 19, five nights inside six days. Yesterday was the third.
The money answer does not survive contact with the accounts
The explanation writes itself. A 90,000-seat stadium picked a concert over a football match because the concert pays better. Some of the British coverage ran exactly that arithmetic: take the capacity, multiply by a ticket price, multiply again by five.
Except Wembley has no debt. The Football Association reported in its 2022-23 annual report that it had finished repaying what it borrowed to build the place. The most recent report, covering 2024-25, states plainly that the stadium is debt-free. An organization with no interest falling due was not forced to trade away its own season opener.
September, November, March
Follow the dates instead.
In September 2025 the Weeknd's promoters stretched his London run from two nights to five. One of the three new dates was August 16. Tickets went on sale that September 12.
Two months later, on November 21, Premier League shareholders fixed the start of the 2026-27 season for August 22, a week later than usual. The expanded 48-team World Cup had taken the summer, and the league wanted 89 clear days after the previous season and 33 after the World Cup final. Players needed the gap.
When the season slid a week, the Community Shield slid with it, because it sits on the weekend before. It landed on August 16.
In March the FA announced the match would go to Cardiff. Wembley, the statement said, was unavailable on August 15 and 16 because of pre-planned concerts.
The Weeknd booked August 16 first. Football arrived on that date two months later.
Who gives up the room
Picture the big conference room in an office. Meetings with outside visitors get set two months ahead and almost never move, because the visitor has already bought a plane ticket and rescheduling now takes two calendars instead of one. Internal team meetings can slide to next week, or the week after. So the side that gives up the room is nearly always the internal one. Owning the building changes nothing.
The FA was the internal team. Football's calendar moves constantly. World Cup years push the season back, broadcasters rearrange days and kickoff times, European fixtures drag weekend matches forward and back. The Premier League released the 2026-27 fixture list on June 19. The same day it moved Newcastle against Liverpool, on the opening weekend, from Saturday to Sunday for television.
That flexibility is not a flaw. But when two parties want the same date, the one that can move is the one that moves. A promoter holding sold tickets cannot.
Wembley opens its doors 42 times a year
It helps to know what kind of building Wembley has become. The FA's 2024-25 report counts 42 events in a single year and more than 2.5 million guests. The FA Cup final and the Women's FA Cup final, the showpiece domestic finals of the English season, drew a combined 158,575 between them. Together they account for less than seven percent of the year's visitors.
In April 2025 the trade publication Pollstar named Wembley its international venue of the year. A football stadium owned by a football association collected a live-music prize in Los Angeles.
None of which makes Wembley a traitor to football. The events are what pay for it. The FA put £158 million back into the game during 2024-25. Most of those 2.5 million did not come for football. The money they left behind ends up on grass pitches in towns that will never host a final.
Cardiff was not a random stand-in either. The Principality Stadium opened in June 1999 with the first fully retractable roof in the UK. It has run as a multi-purpose venue ever since, rugby ground and concert hall in the same building. It staged six Community Shields between 2001 and 2006 while the new Wembley was being built. Yesterday was the seventh, twenty years on.
What the deeds do not cover
The Football Association owns Wembley. The deeds say so and the accounts say so. It did not own August 16. Ownership is settled by documents, possession is settled by a calendar, and a calendar is settled by whoever books first.
Holding something and being free to use it are different conditions. English football crossed into Wales yesterday to find out which one it had. Wembley opened on schedule. Under another name.
