The Sun Vanishes Over Europe This Evening. 'Disaster' Was Never an Accident — It Was a Star Out of Place
This evening, the sky over León, Spain, goes dark at 8:28 p.m. local time. It is mainland Europe's first total solar eclipse since 1999 — a 27-year wait — and people booked their trains months ago. They will stand there with filter glasses and cameras, holding timetables that predict the darkness to the second. Nothing about the scene looks like a disaster.
Fair enough. We know an eclipse is the moon's shadow. But crack open the word "disaster" while you wait for the light to fail, and the scene changes. There is a star inside it.
Open the Word and a Star Falls Out
Disaster comes from the Italian disastro: dis-, meaning ill or wrong, plus astro, meaning star — the same astro that sits in astronomy, from the Latin astrum and the Greek astron. Read literally, a disaster is a star out of place.
English took the word twice over. Désastre appears in French in the 1560s, and the noun crosses the Channel in the 1590s — but the adjective got there first. Disastrous turns up in the 1580s, and its earliest sense, now obsolete, was literally "ill-starred, unlucky." Only around 1600 did it come to mean calamitous.
The noun carried two faces from the start. One is the ruin we mean today; the other is the unfavorable aspect of a planet itself. Dictionaries record the two senses appearing at almost the same moment. So when an Elizabethan heard "disaster," he heard the catastrophe and the omen at once. Medieval Latin had kept a phrase for the second: astrum sinistrum, the ill-boding star. When something went wrong, the culprit was already known. It was the sky.
A word works like a fossil. The shell dies; the impression stays in the rock. Beliefs die the same way, and their shape stays pressed into the language. Disaster is the fossil of an age that explained ruin by the stars.
The Sky Was the First Suspect
Say "astrology" and we picture the horoscope column at the back of a newspaper. Fair enough — that is where it lives now. But when this word was born, astrology sat at the center of things. Universities taught it alongside astronomy, physicians consulted it at the bedside, and kings timed their decisions by it. That the stars governed events on the ground was not a fringe theory. It was the common sense of the age.
One scene shows how far the belief reached. When plague struck France in 1348, the king asked the medical faculty of the University of Paris to explain it. Their answer: a conjunction of Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter. Explanations of that kind held into the seventeenth century.
And within that framework, no star was more terribly out of place than an eclipsed sun. Nothing announced heaven's displeasure like daylight going out at midday.
Nor is disaster the only fossil of this kind. Carl Sagan collected a list of them in Cosmos. Influenza is Italian for "influence" — named in an age that believed an unseen fluid streamed down from the stars into the body, and that epidemics arrived on it. Mazel tov, the Jewish congratulation, originally means "good constellation."
Others lie outside Sagan's list, in the same stratum. A jovial temperament was one born under Jove, the planet Jupiter; a saturnine one was born under Saturn.
In the Fall of 1605, the Sky Went Out Twice
A lunar eclipse passed over England in September 1605. In October, a solar one followed. Within a single month, the moon and then the sun went dark. Shakespeare wrote King Lear around this time, and among the several grounds scholars use to narrow the date, one is those two eclipses — Gloucester's lines read as a reference to that autumn's sky.
In Act 1, Scene 2, the Earl of Gloucester delivers the standard reading of it. These late eclipses in the sun and moon portend no good, he says: love cools, friendship falls off, brothers divide; mutinies in cities, discord in countries, treason in palaces. This was the average opinion of the age. Whoever heard the line had stood under that same sky in the fall of 1605, and most of them likely agreed with him.
Then Gloucester exits, and his bastard son Edmund turns to the audience.
Blaming his own lechery on a constellation, Edmund adds, is the admirable evasion of a scoundrel. The speech is more than 420 years old.
We want to applaud him. He is right, after all: as long as ruin is the sky's fault, no one on the ground has to answer for anything. But notice who gets the speech. Shakespeare hands it to the play's great villain — the man who deceives his star-fearing father and sets in motion the plot that costs him his eyes. The argument against blaming the stars was correct. The man who made it spent that freedom on betrayal.
For the word itself, the scene is doubly remarkable. A term the audience still heard as ruin sent by the stars is losing exactly that half of its meaning, on stage, in front of them. Hamlet, written a few years earlier, uses the older half straight: "disasters in the sun" — not a catastrophe but a portent in the sky.
This Evening, We Wait With a Timetable
Today in Spain, NASA's city-by-city table is making the rounds. León at 8:28 p.m., Zaragoza at 8:29, Valencia at 8:32. Darkness forecast to the second. Not a star out of place — an orbit that lines up exactly as computed.
In the centuries between, the stars came off the suspect list. Epidemics turned out to be viruses, failed harvests turned out to be weather, and collapses show up in ledgers. The words, though, never updated. Call the flu influenza, shout mazel tov at a wedding, type "disaster" when something falls apart — and you are quoting the sentence of an age that blamed the sky. No one is left who believes it. The quotation goes on.
That is what a fossil is for. You do not study the shell to bring it back to life; you study it to prove the ground was once an ocean. What the fossil called disaster proves is this. Faced with ruin, the first thing humans did was not to prepare. It was to prosecute. And the first suspect was the sky.
One more fossil sits in the word for this evening's event itself. Eclipse comes from the Greek ekleipsis — an abandonment, a forsaking. The sun, in that reading, deserts its accustomed place and fails to appear. This evening, we are traveling to watch the desertion.
